Happy Holidays!

If you are like many people I know, the week between Christmas and New Year’s will not always see the greatest amount of progress on a scorecard. Decisions bet pushed aside in favor of holiday cheer, and the most sophisticated planning that takes place is timing the visits to multiple sets of parents, grand-parents, and New Year’s party-givers. So this year MOM doesn’t ask anyone to do anything, except to simply get ready to HIT THE GROUND RUNNING STARTING JAN. 2!

The Coastal North Carolina group now has a higher focus on communication than ever before, and hopefully that is visible. The result should be better planning tools for customer discussions, better and longer-term marketing proposals for local businesses, and more sustainable (renewable) campaigns.

This edition of MOM, basically is just emphasizing tools that we already have available, and a request for all to sound off (respond to any of the posts) if there is something better that you would like to see. The remainder of this week’s posting is a reminder of where to find calendars, reports, contact information, deadlines, workflow modifications, product updates, and general business forecasts that will make it a little easier for all of us to do our jobs. You will also continue to see a focus on trying to make the job of closing and fulfilling campaigns easier through the entire year.

Every member of the StarNews Media and ENC Media Group marketing sales team(s) has taken in much over the past year. There will continue to be changes in the way we do our jobs, the way we communicate to our markets, and the way we want to be perceived by the marketplace. The least we can also do is to try to make these changes plain, simple, and easy to accomplish. MOM has your back on that, and will listen to any voice that has a suggestion going forward.

So MOM’s gift to y’all (as I try desperately to shake some of the “Yankee” off my vernacular) is to take a breather and celebrate the holiday season…just not too long of a breather. We have much right around the corner, and we’ll do our best to support the road to success that everyone is navigating.

Happy holidays!

UPDATE! Internal Sales Calendar

  • Note: This is an INTERNAL calendar, to be used for scheduling sales activity and planning. Customer facing calendars are being prepared quickly. This is a “live” calendar that is available 24/7, via all devices. This is a great tool that will enable access to sales dates, deadlines, and future scheduling. Show customers what will work for them for the entire year, not just next week. Access the section and event sales calendar online, here.

UPDATE! The 70% Solution

  • StarNewsOnline is finishing the year in style with a strong 70+% sell thru. In fact, today’s report puts this at 80+%!

2018 Q1 Kick off Deck

For those that still have not accessed, here is the deck from last week’s kick off meeting. We will have all sales meeting decks posted to the drive after our weekly webinars as well. These are available on all devices, 24/7 access…just the thing for your late night reading, when you are settling down with a warm cup of cocoa before going to bed. Doesn’t everyone? 🙂

NEW! Tablet Reimbursement Policy

As you heard in our Q1 Kick-off meeting, MMSE’s at ENC Media Group and StarNews Media are now eligible for reimbursement with th epurchase of a standard iPad or iPad Pro. Our goal is to support, develop, (and yes even brag about) the most elite sales team in the GateHouse network. Insuring that we all have state-of-the-art tools is just one step towards that goal. Explanation of the policy and the required Reimbursement Form are now on the CNC Sales Folder. Please save this entire folder to your Drive for future reference.  Here’s a couple of quick details on this policy.

  • This is limited to standard iPad and iPad Pro models only at this time. In “non-technical” jargon, iOS is a very stable, consistent, secure and robust platform that will support all of our efforts. If additional tablet models meet the same requirements we can have those added in to the policy as well, but for now, we are limiting only to these models.
  • The Tablet Reimbursement Form should be completed and submitted along with a copy of the receipt for approval. Your manager will submit all approved documents to HR, then it will be submitted as reimbursement through payroll.
  • All MMSE’s will be expected to utilize the tablets in the field and as a part of their regular responsibilities. However, the tablet itself is the property of the individual making the purchase…it is yours!
  • Several apps will be required for download through the Apple Store, but to my knowledge all are free…(i.e. Google Drive, Gmail and Google calendar if you prefer, etc.)
  • Any/all presentations prepared in PowerPoint can be saved in PDF format and can be downloaded onto the units for view. (Limiting transitions, graphics, etc. is best practice for customer view anyway.)

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY…2017

Taking A Look Back…Before We Move Forward

The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

This is our annual combination Happy-Holidays/Year-In-Review to celebrate how far we’ve come over the past year. Yes, there are good, even great achievements. And with the good, comes some not as good. At times, this stuff turns downright ugly! But there is always hope! For every “bad” and “ugly” there’s also a fantastic OPPORTUNITY. Remember, every time a bell rings, another angel becomes Google AdWord Certified…or something like that.

So…here is the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly for the Coastal North Carolina Group in 2017.

The Good…

  • Combined. ENCMG and SNM we accounted for almost 500 ThriveHive contracts sold in 2018, worth more than $1.3 million. WOW!
  • StarNews Media executed its first GateHouse Live event, StarNews Varsity, featuring All-Pro Linebacker Luck Kuechly as the guest speaker. The Best of StarNewsVarsity event was a huge success letting the entire Wilmington community know that SNM events are big…and getting bigger!
  • ENCMG created its first Athlete of the Week sponsorships in New Bern and Jacksonville. Both are still running and have their own exclusive business sponsors.
  • ENC Media Group held it’s own events, the Bridal Expo, the Home & Garden Show, and the recent 2017 Home & Holiday Show surpassing all previous attendance and revenue numbers. This schedule is expanding in 2018 with the addition of a Home & Garden Show in Jacksonville.
  • StarNews Media and ENCMG both closed RECORD promotion revenue and activity in 2017, and are forecasting another record year in 2018!
  • And also in ENC-land, New Bern created 2 weekly features, 52 Faces of Community and Your Health section.  Both of these are excellent readership features that also include highly valued business sponsorships.
  • StarNews Media created its own “Million Impressions Club” rewarding individual sales rep performance for closing 1 million monthly O&O impressions. This helped lead the way for a whopping 200% increase in sell thru, closing the year at over the 70% GateHouse minimum.
  • ENCMG finished the year with a 50+% sell-thru for Rich Media positions, a metric they have held throughout the year. Plus, the year-end front page note sales blitz closed contrasts worth a total of 500+ dates across all three properties, all of these also include Rich Media positions continuing the strong sell-thru metrics.
  • Northern Illinois University was selected to play Duke in the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl. Go Huskies!

The Bad…

  • Local businesses in our markets are still spending 9+ hours a week themselves on marketing! We need to help them!
  • 10% of small businesses in our markets claim they will be decreasing newspaper spending in 2018. (The only reason is is Bad and not Ugly is that this is better than the national metric of 26%!)
  • Weekday circulation for newspapers across the nation dropped by 10%.
  • 82.5% of local digital ad spending in our markets is placed directly with 3rd party providers, (Facebook, Google, Cars.com, etc.)
  • Chicago Blackhawks defeated by the Nashville Predators in the first round of the 2017 Western Conference Stanley Cup Series.
  • Chicago Cubs defeated by the LA Dodgers in the 2017 NLCS.

The Ugly…

  • Newspapers are ranked as some of the least effective ad mediums by small businesses in our markets.
  • 6,403 major name, multi-location retail stores have closed this year across the country
  • No more than 6% of millennials access news regularly via print media
  • Chicago Bears & Chicago White Sox
  • Justin Bieber singing Christmas carols!

Marketing

NEW-Pie Chart of the Week

Locally Addressable Ad Budgets…or, what’s available after budgets are spent directly with Google and Facebook?

This may not be pretty, but it’s true. Almost 83% of online ad budgets are spent directly with 3rd parties.

  • Paid Search: 47.8%
  • Social Media Advertising: 19.1%
  • All Other: 15.6%
  • Locally addressable: 17.5%

This is a seemingly small piece of the pie that is available to us locally. And that changes, only, with an increased sales pressure, and an increase in our skill sets. After all, the only reason that local businesses would go directly to a 3rd party that we can also support, is either confidence, ease of access, or price. That last one gets mitigated as the first one increases, so we only need to make our services more available, and easier to use.

You can find a larger view of this graphic and all other Borrell charts here, on the drive.

Update! Holiday eCards ready for our customers!

GateHouse Media has prepared attractive eCards for you to personalize and send to clients. You may already have seen this last week, with the recent GateHouse Sales & Marketing Newsletter. But just in case you can also access the cards and instructions here. Go ahead and download the one you wish to use, and the accompanying instructions, and share your holiday wishes for a great season and thank them for their business.

ENC Media Group Brochures

Just in…we have new ENC Media Group Sales Brochures that are available for all sales personnel. These great new brochures provide an overview of ENC Media Group, print and digital. As we continue to brand ourselves as a regional marketing powerhouse, this will help explain the overall capabilities and reach of our local properties, ENC Media Group, ThriveHive, and GateHouse Media.

StarNews Media brochures and regionally focused Coastal North Carolina Group brochures are currently in the works. Look for them in Q1!

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

You’ve Changed On The Inside…But Does It Show!

Over the past 12-18-24 months we have seen a significant amount of change…in the way we do business, who we do business with, who we work with among our own “family” here to do business, etc. It’s amaizing how much change has taken place. And we seem to be pushing through, thank you. But what about our custmers? What changes are they seeing? What changes are they planning on making in the new year? And what impact are those changes having on us? What will the impact be on us in 2018?

We actually have a little insight into what changes our own locall businesses plan to make in 2018 with the Borrell SMB survey. And if we use that insight, it might allow us to focus on changes we can make to our own go-to-market narrative that will put us in a good position going forward.

The chart below, shows how local SMB’s in our own 7-County NCN region responded to the recent survey when asked how they would be changing their ad spending in the new year. This is important, becauses it shows the relative importance that some media will have, while also showing the relative decrease in importance. You can also see a larger version of this chart from our drive, here.

Survey results from local businesses in our markets are telling us that Online ad spending will increase by 12% in 2018. (Note that Local TV stations are expected to receive a 14% increase, something for us to watch, pun not intended.) The same survey results are suggesting that newspapers will be receiving 10% less in ad spending in 2018. And newspapers will not be alone in seeing less ad spending in the new year.

To ground ourselves, let’s all take a realistic view of this. These relative %’s are changes from 2017 spending, so 1% of Online spending is not the same as 1% of newspaper spending. But countering that is the knowledge that we all have that online spending is greater than newspaper spending overall, so a 1% change in Online spending is actually greater than a 1% change in Newspaper spending.

So, taking 3 steps back from these results, a quick summary might be that in 2018, Online media is going to be more important to local businesses in our markets than newspapers…it will demand more dollars, it will take a much bigger part in overall ad spending for local businesses.

So, what does this mean to me?

Are we a newspaper that also has digital capabilities? Or are we a digitally focused marketing company that has multiple media opportunities for local businesses? If we continue to be the former, we are drifting further and further away from the direction our local businesses are headed. All the changes we have adopted, are internal. It’s time we start turning those changes towards local businesses in our markets. The change we need to adopt for 2018 is an external one. We must change how our local businesses view us, they must start believing in us as a digital first provider, not a newspaper that also has some digital products to offer. Ch-ch-ch-change, by being the most important provider of the most important marketing channel they utilize in their business in 2018.

Marketing

NEW-Pie Chart of the Week

How Many SMB’s Will Increase Digital Spend in 2018?

This may come as no surprise to any of us, but nearly 2/3’s of local businesses in the 7-County Coastal North Carolina region are planning to INCREASE their use of digital media for 2018 ad campaigns. 4% claim they will be decreasing, and the remainder simply was not certain or claim they will remain the same.

  • 65% plan to increase
  • 31% are uncertain, or will remain the same
  • 4% plan to decrease

This is important, not because it’s just a repeat of what we’ve been saying all along, but because this is our own local businesses stating their intentions. This coincides with intentions expressed across the entire country emanating from recent SMB surveys.

NEW-Google Infographics from ThriveHive

This week’s infographic focuses on the FINANCE category. March and April are too late to approach tax preperation firms. If we don’t have proposals in front of them today, we may miss out.

  • 36% of all searches for this category are now on mobile devices
  • “How to” tax videos are rising rapidly on YouTube
  • Use Location and Call extensions in all SEM campaigns for best results
Click on the graphic for a larger view. You can also copy this for use in presentations.

Take a look at the ThriveHive training site under Resources for  the entire gallery of Google Infographics.  (These are the kind of graphics that make me look smart…and I can use all the help that I can get!) This gallery will be dynamic, more added as they are available. For now, there is a wide variety of business categories available.

Infographics are great cool ways to get the point across. Check out the entire gallery, download the one(s) that fit your customer discussions and presentations.

Don’t Believe Everything You Read…Ooops, Did I Really Say That?

There’s Work To Do, But We’re Doin’ OK

If you are tired of hearing about the lousy state of newspapers in their markets, you just might like this one. A recently published report makes a strong case for small market newspapers to be doing a much better job than the major metro’s in attending to their markets. While most of the media reports focus on metros in cities like LA, Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, a vast majority of newspaper titles are located in markets just like ours. And we are doing a much better job of staying close to our local customers and changing our product mix along with our go-to-market message.

You can read more about this report and an interview with the author here in StreetFightMag, but here are the high points, and how they really track where we are and our overall direction moving into the new year.

  • Newspapers are still part of the community. All the discussion about “moving to digital” is absolutely true. But it does not mean that newspapers have disappeared, a good portion of our markets still buy them and read them.
  • Newspapers in smaller markets have not run to the “shiny new toy” when it comes to emerging digital products, taking a more measured approach. This tracks the audience adoption of new technologies.
  • Smaller market newspapers (print and digital) are still the primary voice of and for the community, and we tend to know more about our communities than do the more often discussed metro’s.

So does this mean that everything is hunky-dory now?

This report does not say that smaller market newspapers have everything licked. But it does mean that you cannot characterize “newspapers” all the same. We (smaller market newspaper media companies) do a better job in our markets than the more often discussed major dailies. And local businesses in our markets need to know that because they are hearing dire forecasts from our competition.

One of the primary reasons that we are in a better position is that we are not focusing solely on our “owned” media. The size of the audience that picks up our daily newspapers and/or views our websites is changing. But our ability to deliver a broader, more targeted, more responsive audience to any business in our market has increased via emerging digital products, and our own increased product knowledge and training.

The bottom line is that our sales organization is better equipped today to serve our local markets than ever before. And our owned media still has a stronger impact on the local audience in each of our markets than do any of the major dailies. That is the message we need to carry to businesses in our local communities.

So as we approach 2018, with increased expectations to deliver on emerging products and marketing services, lets’ remember that we have a much stronger position than media reports might suggest. We are strong players in our own markets, and the emerging products, promotions, events that we expose local businesses to can play a much stronger role in the business lives of our own customers. And with that comes the obligation to dig in and push even harder to provide the right services for businesses and readers in our own markets.

Social Management Packaging

  • ThriveHive has improved the Social Management packages making them fit the way that local businesses have been requesting. While the previous packages can still be closed thru Nov. 30, you should no longer be adding them to proposals, instead moving over to the new packages. (Note: I personally closed on one of the old packages last week and will be carrying through with that sale so it’s ok to move forward with the expiring packages if you’ve already included.) Collateral on the new Social Packaging is on the TH training site, and also downloaded to our drive, here.
